Rewriting fairytales
Degree project
"Into the woods"
The forest is the most emblematic place of fairytales, it is the dark, frightening setting of many stories : the Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White... It is a place where characters have to confront their fears in order to evolve, gain maturity.
In the Rapunzel fairytale, the heroine also finds herself into the woods, after being cast away from her tower by the witch. In a classic story, she would go into the forest and face its dangers, but I chose to imagine that in my version, Rapunzel is way to scared... So she decides to use her long cut braid as a cord, attached to her tower, so that she would always find her way back home.
I expressed this idea with a cuff staging a dreadful forest, whose trees become more and more tormented the deeper you go, and a braid that clings to the branches, materializing Rapunzel’s path.
